THE ROMAN TRAVERTINE The guarantee of value over time

Travertine is a natural stone that belongs to the category of calcareous sedimentary rocks due to the incrustations of calcareous fresh water at the edges of the springs, at waterfalls and in the bottom of the basins located at the edge of the volcanic areas and in the vicinity of gas emission sulphides. The best travertine deposits in our country are found in the Lazio region, particularly the Tivoli - Guidonia extraction basin where the cultivation of the numerous open-air quarries has been appreciated for the large amount of travertine inside them since the third century BC.
There are also several quarries in Umbria, Marche and Tuscany: it is no coincidence that the Etruscans used travertine to build walls, city gates, stones and urns. But the evidence that travertine was widely and admirably used since ancient times is clearest in the very famous sculptural and architectural works of inestimable historical importance and artistic value which still testify to the widespread use and extreme resistance to atmospheric agents.
The Colosseum, the Marcello Theater, the Trevi Fountain, the Colonnade of St. Peter, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Bernini Fountains, the Triumphal Arches, the Baroque Churches and the Imperial Palaces are just some of the countless monuments that the ancestors of our territory created with Roman travertine - a material appreciated and used even in recent times, both in modern and classical architecture. In the capital, travertine has its well-deserved role as a precious ornamental construction material for the Palace of Justice, the University City, the Palazzo della Civiltà e del Lavoro, the Olympic Stadium and the Mosque in Rome.
